Corporate Social Responsibility

Spread the love

We are committed to conducting our business ethically; encouraging community development; protecting and enhancing the natural environment; encouraging and promoting human learning and development; and actively contributing to society. As a result we seek to:

  • Operate from day-to-day in an environmentally and socially responsible way
  • Use resources more efficiently and reduce pollution and waste
  • Employ energy efficient measures such as switching off lights and equipment when not required
  • Reduce the amount of paper wasted and encourage all employees to recycle/compost where appropriate
  • Support and strengthen local communities by participating in school mentoring schemes
  • Be involved in community-based development and working with the local community
  • Give monetary donations and aid to local charities and other worthy organisations
  • Participate in fundraising activities and community volunteering

Last year Blacks raised in excess of an £10,000 for various charities and we were delighted to win the 2018 FB Fashion Ball Award for CSR Team of the Year.

Blacks’ Charity of the Year

Each year our employees nominate charities to be considered by our CSR team for inclusion on our shortlist for Charity of the Year. We then hold a staff vote and each member of the Team decides on a particular cause. This year Blacks are proud to be supporting the Leeds Mind, which is based in Leeds. We have undertaken various fundraising activities already this year – with more to come.

Local Charities

We also support a range of other local charities including:

  • Martin House Children’s Hospice cares for young people with life limiting illnesses and provides support to their families
  • Heart Research UK funds ground-breaking medical research into the prevention, treatment and cure of heart disease
  • Candlelighters help and support children who have been diagnosed with cancer, and their families
  • Macmillan provides support and advice to people going through, or affected by, cancer
  • Barnardos believes in children regardless of their circumstances, gender, race, disability or behaviour
  • St Gemma’s Hospice provides care for local people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses
  • Marie Curie provides care and support for people living with any terminal illness, and their families
  • Simon on the Streets offers street-based, front-line emotional and practical support for those who need it in Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield
  • Cancer Support Yorkshire provides practical and emotional support to those affected by cancer across the Yorkshire Region
  • The Yorkshire Legal Support Trust is the local arm of The Access to Justice Foundation; a grant-making charity, which raises and distributes funds to support free legal advice services and access to justice for all

Jackie’s Tuck Shop

In addition, Jackie Johnson, a Secretary in the Blacks’ Corporate & Commercial team, runs a Tuck Shop at our offices and all profits are distributed to small local charities and sports clubs.

Corporate Sponsorships

Blacks provide corporate sponsorship to a number of worthy causes including:

Dementia Friends and Leeds Dementia Action Alliance

Blacks are part of the Leeds Dementia Action Alliance, and Annie Beaumont recently trained as a Dementia Friends Champion which allows her to provide training to staff and contacts of the firm.

Work Experience

Blacks continue to provide Work Experience to no less than 50 students each year.

Mentoring Schemes

Many members of staff are involved in mentoring students from College of York, Leeds Beckett University, BPP, Notre Dame, and Roundhay School.
